The law on gay marriage was championed by David Cameron but more than 130 Conservatives MPs voted against the legislation which passed in July 2013 with the support of the Lib Dems and Labour.
During a parliamentary debate, Archbishop Welby warned the Same-Sex Marriage Act would 'weaken' the the idea of the 'family in its normal sense'.
