(ANTIMEDIA) United Kingdom — The anti-Muslim backlash in the U.K. in the wake of events in Paris has resulted in the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) issuing a safety alert for British Muslims.

Since Friday’s tragic events in Paris, the U.K. has seen a spike in incidents of violent assault and anti-Muslim hatred taking place in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

“F*** off back to Syria”

On Sunday November 15, a takeaway owner was hospitalised after being set upon by at least a dozen youths when closing his shop in Fife, Scotland. Shouts of “ISIS”could be heard during the attack, which resulted in Mohammed Khalid sustaining a serious eye injury and his wife injuring her hip.

A fire was started at 2 a.m. on November 17th at the city’s Bishopbriggs Community Centre, which is used by worshippers as a mosque, and Police in Scotland are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime against Glasgow’s Muslim community.

A Muslim man and his family are lucky to be alive after their home was petrol bombed by racist thugs in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. As the family slept upstairs, the bomb ignited the living room. Police are treating the incident as a religious hate crime.

Independent, NGO Tell Mama, which works on tackling anti-Muslim hatred, reported a spike in incidents in the last 36 hours. Most recently, an attack was directed at a young woman on the London Underground who was told to “f*** off back to Syria because girls do not wear hijabs in England.”

“Taking our country back”

An offshoot of the far-right British National Party (BNP), Britain First commanded the public’s attention in 2014 with the slogan: “taking our country back.”  Despite the group’s Facebook page boasting 80,000 new followers since the Paris attacks, the real support for the group was evidenced during their national conference this week, which was attended by a paltry 50 people.

Specialising in the creation of xenophobic memes and spreading of Islamophobic rhetoric, the group used their annual conference to call for the banning of Islam in the U.K., a ban on the media from using the word “racism,” and a host of other policies on immigration which members voted for by raising miniature Union Jack flags.

While the spike in malicious attacks on Muslims since the Paris attacks must not be downplayed, the rise in abuse during the last week further compounds what has become normal for many British Muslims. A recent report by the Metropolitan Police documented an increase of 70% in hate crimes against Muslims in London.

Environment of Hate

Raza Nadim, spokesperson for Muslim Public Affairs Committee UK (MPACUK) told Anti-Media:

“The spike in attacks on Muslims since Friday should not come as a surprise to anyone – especially in France. For decades we have seen the dehumanising of Muslims by our political establishment and mainstream media outlets. It is only natural that this festering hate would manifest itself in a more violent sense.”

The peddling of war on terror narratives, and targeting by the media, politicians, and far-right groups has led the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) to describe Britain as “an ever developing ‘Stasi state’ rife with hatred for the ‘suspect’ Muslim community.”

A shocking new report, “Environment of Hate: The New Normal for Muslims in the UK” by IHRC, delivers disturbing insight into how abuse and discrimination have become the normal experience of British Muslims. The study documents a staggering increase in the number of people reporting both verbal abuse and physical attacks since the last survey in 2010.

Some findings:

Those who report ‘always’ seeing negative stereotypes of Muslim people in the media rose from 10% in 2010 to 39.4% in 2014.

In 2010, 30% of respondents said they ‘never’ saw negative stereotypes of Muslims in the media, in 2014 however, 94% of respondents said they saw negative stereotypes.

21.3% of those who described their religiosity as ‘practising Muslim’ felt they were ‘always’ witnessing politicians philosophise that Islam is problematic.

In 2010 fewer than 60% of respondents said they encountered politicians using Islamophobic rhetoric, but that figure has risen to almost 85% as of 2014.

87.7% of those surveyed agree that “those who discriminate against us are highly driven by media content.”

The experience of physical assault increased from 13.9% in 2010 to17.8% in 2014.

58% of those surveyed felt they had experienced being treated with suspicion or being wrongly accused of something.

66% of those surveyed have experienced verbal abuse at some point – a definite increase from the 39.8% in 2010.

Asked for his response to the backlash after the Paris attacks, MPACUK spokesperson Nadim was frank, saying: “The way that so many have expected Muslims to condemn these attacks has been extremely offensive & added to the problem as well.”

He added: “The problem of terrorism is being treated as one solely to do with Islam, nothing to do with unjust foreign policies, and something only Muslims can sort out and this view leads to even more hate and isolation of Muslims in our society.”
