'Iran's real enemy is Saudi, not Israel'

Gulf state is the primary enemy due to its support of Syrian rebels over Assad, say Iranian officials

Iranian officials said that Tehran considers Saudi Arabia its first and foremost enemy, not Israel or the United States, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported on Saturday.

Former US State Department official Frederick Hoff told Kuwaiti media outlet al-Rai that Iranian officials said Riyadh’s intervention in Syria on the side of the rebels poses a strategic threat to Tehran, a loyal supporter of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"The US and Israel haven’t intervened in Syria," the Iranian officials were quoted saying. "The real problem is Saudi Arabia, and Turkey."

According to Hoff, the Iranian officials also addressed the issue of an Israeli military attack on Iran and warned the Jewish state of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

"Iranian officials believe that any Israeli leader who might think about launching any attack on Iran should first think about the impact of rockets on Israeli cities, economic infrastructure, and military bases," he added.

In December Saudi Arabia announced it would give the Lebanese military 3 billion dollars in financial aid, in part to counter Iran’s financial support for Hezbollah.

"Diplomatic failure means military action"

US State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told the Jerusalem Post Friday that if current diplomatic efforts with Iran fail, a resolution to the nuclear crisis "is likely to involve military action."

"I’m not predicting that we would take military action right away," Harf said. "It’s more of a broad statement that, look, if we can’t get this done diplomatically in six months or a year or at any time, we will – we are committed to resolving it. And that involves less durable and, quite frankly, riskier actions."

"There are only a few scenarios that come out of this: either we resolve it diplomatically or we resolve it a different way," Harf continued. "It’s just common sense that that different way could involve – is likely to involve military action."

In his annual State of the Union speech on Tuesday, US President Barack Obama made a powerful plea to give diplomacy a chance to resolve the decade-old standoff with Iran over its nuclear program.

"It is American diplomacy, backed by pressure, that has halted the progress of Iran's nuclear program -- and rolled parts of that program back -- for the very first time in a decade," Obama said.

"With our allies and partners, we're engaged in negotiations to see if we can peacefully achieve a goal we all share: preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," he stressed.

Next round of nuclear talks

Also this week, top Iranian and European Union diplomats agreed on Friday that the next round of talks on Tehran's contested nuclear program would commence on February 18 in Vienna.

In an initial accord in November, Iran agreed with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- plus Germany (a group known as E3+3) that it would open up its nuclear program so as to allay fears it was seeking atomic weapons.

In return, the world powers agreed to a progressive lifting of tough sanctions that have caused immense damage to the Iranian economy.

Earlier this month, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, certified that Tehran had stuck to its side of the initial deal, giving access to key nuclear installations and cutting back its enriched uranium stockpile.

Accordingly, the European Union and the United States began lifting sanctions on Jananuar 20, laying the groundwork for the next, six-month stage of the process.

During this period, the United States and the EU have promised to impose no new sanctions.
